High School Sports: Quality over quantity for Berryville wrestlers (1/21/21)

Thursday, January 21, 2021 Berryville senior Dominic Henry grapples with a Gentry wrestler at a recent meet. Charles Chappell / CCImages.PhotoShelter.com The Berryville High School wrestling team doesn’t have the depth to compete for the Class 4A state team title this year, but that doesn’t mean the Bobcats won’t be a factor at the state championships. Berryville coach Payton Covington said just about every wrestler on the Bobcats’ thin roster is capable of competing for an individual state title. “We don’t have a lot of guys, but the ones we have are really good,” Covington said. Berryville’s roster includes two wrestlers who’ve already won state championships. Junior Caleb Record is a two-time state champ and senior Dominic Henry won a state title as a sophomore and was a state runner-up last season. Senior Dylan Sperduto also could be a contender at the state meet after posting second- and third-place finishes at two previous state meets, as could sophomore Tun Oo.

Longtime volunteer, A Rebecca Smith

The people of Cecil County lost a true treasure last week, Miss Ada Rebecca Smith, known to many as “Miss Becky”, passed away at the age of 105. She would have celebrated her 106th birthday on Monday, December 21. The much respected and loved educator and guidance counselor was born on December 21, 1914 in a blizzard and ice storm. Miss Smith was a lifelong member of Zion United Methodist Church. She lived in Cecilton her whole life, except while attending Western Maryland College. After graduating from George Biddle High School in 1931, she graduated from college at the age of 20. Miss Smith was hired to teach at Perryville High School in 1935. In the 10 years she taught there, she was a social studies teacher and a volleyball coach. In 1943, Miss Smith transferred to Elkton High School, where she taught U.S. History. In 1966, she became one of the first guidance counselors in the county. She remained a guidance counselor until her retirement in 1976, having taught and co

High School Sports: BHS wrestlers in action: Bobcats short on numbers, long on talent (12/15/20)

It’s quality over quantity for the Berryville High School wrestling team. The Bobcats had just eight wrestlers compete in a dual match last Tuesday against Gentry, leaving six weight classes unfilled. As might be expected, Gentry took the most points thanks to those unfilled weight classes but first-year Berryville coach Payton Covington said his team won the majority of the actual matches. “We ended up losing the dual but we won most of the matches that we wrestled,” Covington said. “We don’t have a lot of kids, but the ones we have are dang good.” Among the top wrestlers for Berryville are seniors Dominic Henry and Dylan Sperduto and junior Caleb Record.
