Winter farmers markets thriving despite pandemic

NIAGARA COUNTY, N.Y. (WKBW) â Cold temperatures and even the pandemic couldn t stop producers from attending the winter farmers market in North Tonawanda and Lockport.
Jonathan Berry of Berry Farms said they ve been setting up in one particular spot for 25 years. We come pretty much every weekend. We have our cabbage down there, we still have our potatoes still, we still got our beets left and some carrots and onions left, said Berry.
He said despite the ongoing pandemic, business has been good. It s actually been really good since the pandemic. I think a lot of people are not going to the grocery stores, they re actually coming back to the farmers markets, supporting their local farmers, he said.
Franklin has named the street of the city s new fire station in honor of the department s first Black firefighter, John Fitzgerald.
Fitzgerald was hired in 1972, and the station s address will be 1972 John Fitzgerald Dr. in honor of his hiring date. He joined the department at the urging of his brother, who was a Franklin police officer.
The street sign was unveiled Friday in an event Fitzgerald attended. He said it was overwhelming and awesome to have a street named in his honor. I am so forever grateful, he said.
Fitzgerald was raised on Church Street in downtown Franklin and attended Natchez High School, where Black children were forced to go because of segregation. In 1967 during his junior year, the school closed because of integration.

Ultra-low-cost carrier Sun Country is adding new routes from DFW International Airport to California’s John Wayne Airport in Orange County and Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, trying to snag the few passengers willing to fly with bargain-priced tickets.
Minneapolis-based Sun Country said Monday that it’s launching the new seasonal flights in May, operating twice weekly in a strategy used by budget carriers to serve maximum demand.
