As commentary in the media ramps up about schools excluding students who display extreme behaviours, Perry Rush, President of the New Zealand Principals’ Federation has again expressed the views of the Federation.
“Let’s be clear,” he said. “School principals support the inclusion policy and believe every child has the right to an education for which they are best suited.”
Bowen had sold the family home to offset costs and wife Loren has been unemployed since July. On an essential skills work visa, he said he was supporting his family in South Africa and himself. “They are taking enormous strain. They are heartbroken.” Immigration New Zealand (INZ) said 49,984 people hold an essential skills visa – 890 of them are education professionals. But the visas of about 145 education professionals will expire on or before December 31, 2021. “An individual who wants to remain in New Zealand beyond the date of expiry of their current visa needs to apply for a new visa,” a spokeswoman said.

A decile 10 school in central Auckland says the gap is widening between it and lower decile schools because of the Government’s donation scheme. But the principal of a decile one school in another part of the city disagrees, saying her students are better off under the current arrangement. Since 2020, decile 1-7 schools have had the option to receive $150 per student, per year instead of asking their families for donations. Decile 8-10 schools are excluded.
Education Minister Chris Hipkins has defended the ministry s handling of serious problems that forced Hutt Valley High School (HVHS) to close an entire block of classrooms.
