U.S. Bank-Elavon VP Terra Wallace leads investments in Black businesses
Rolling out sat down with Terra Wallace, vice president of education and engagement for U.S. Bank-Elavon, to discuss her leadership initiative to support Black businesses and communities. The Fortune 500 company announced a $450,000 investment in the Russell Innovation Center for Entrepreneurs.
Can you share with us a little bit about the journey and how you got here before announcing the investment?
I came across RICE, the Russell Innovation Center for Entrepreneurs in March of 2020. We were going through the pandemic, and I knew a lot of Black businesses were struggling. You know, the pandemic affected small Black businesses very differently than it affected other small businesses, or non-minority businesses, and I was trying to find a way to continue to encourage our Black small businesses during that time and give them hope and resources as they were out trying to figure it out. Reid discussed the growing movement in the U.S. to reframe how American history is taught and said that some parents opposed to CRT aren t too pleased, before playing a video clip of an emotional mother expressing her opposition. Just because I do not want critical race theory taught to my children in school does not mean I am a racist damnit, the unnamed mother said tearfully in front of a room with others and was met with clapping.

DETROIT, May 5, 2021 /PRNewswire/ Michigan Minority Supplier Development Council President and CEO Michelle Sourie Robinson announced today at the organization s 2021 Michigan Minority Procurement Conference the results of a study on economic equity for people of color which showed that at current growth rates, it will take a stunning 333 years for Minority Business Enterprises (MBEs) to achieve revenue equity with white-owned businesses in our nation.
Robinson said that increasing supplier diversity remains a major challenge, and that achieving parity would bring a significant boost to the overall economy. For example, achieving parity between Black-owned and white-owned businesses would add $290 billion in overall wealth.

On the advice of the International Olympic Committee s (IOC) Athletes Commission, the IOC Executive Board last week resolved to continue to censor athletes who participate in peaceful protest at the Olympic Games, especially in the most powerful spaces of the podium and the arena. Patronisingly, the censorship is now coupled with scripting, with the IOC endorsing the use of the words, peace, respect, solidarity, inclusion and equality.
In the words of Bernice King, chief executive of the Martin Luther King Center for Nonviolent Social Change, Inclusion does not = equity. Diversity does not = justice. Tolerance does not = love. Silence does not = peace.
