True cost of COVID-19 to Gold Coast and Qld

News by Paul Weston Premium Content Subscriber only ONLY now, 12 months on from the first recorded case in Queensland, is the real toll from COVID-19 emerging. Below are the responses to a parliamentary health committee inquiry.   COVID DEATHS One year on since the first recorded COVID death, the figures worldwide have topped more than two million people. Cases have now climbed to 95 million worldwide. Six deaths were recorded at the beginning of the pandemic in Queensland; none since. The state has had 1303 positive COVID-19 cases, of which 23 are currently active, all isolated in hospital. Chief Health Officer Jeannette Young said she was proud of the state s response with minimal community transmission, but regarded the risk as remaining high with the virus still detected in wastewater.

How controversial quarantine camps would work

A drastic proposal to Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk will take her plan to national cabinet next week, with authorities to also discuss it with the federal government in coming days. But the proposal is understood to have stumped the Morrison Government because Queensland does not need Commonwealth approval for changes to its quarantine system as long as it meets guidelines established last year. Ms Palaszczuk s plan could only operate through existing international ports - meaning arrivals would need to land somewhere with capacity to process international passengers before they were shuttled to a regional community. Former federal Health Department boss Jane Halton, who led the Morrison Government s review into hotel quarantine, said there had been quite worrying changes to the virus that highlighted that quarantine systems would have to be adaptable.

Cross-country skiing and snowshoeing coming to North Hastings

January 12, 2021 By Chris Drost While most are aware of the improvements made to the trails in Eagles Nest Park this past year, some may not be aware that work was also completed at McGeachie Conservation Area and at The Gut. Further to these improvements, Hastings Destination Trails Inc. is excited to announce that cross-country ski and snowshoe trails at McGeachie Conservation Area are now open to the public. Winter sports have become especially important in this year when other types of indoor experiences have been curtailed. “People understand the importance of getting outside, particularly this year,” says chair of HDTI, Cathy Trimble. The group has been working in tandem with its partners, Crowe Valley Conservation Area (owners of the property at McGeachie) and the Township of Limerick, to get things ready to go this month.
