CONFIRMATION OF PRIVATE equity firm CVC buying a 1/7th share of Six Nations Rugby has been greeted with relief by the six unions who are giving up a portion of their competition for €426 million amidst the huge financial challenge caused by Covid-19.
Ireland need a statement win to frank progress under Andy Farrell, says Bernard Jackman.
The head coach has overseen 12 games since taking over from Joe Schmidt at the end of 2019, with seven wins and five defeats to his name.
That sequence of results, which includes home wins over Scotland and Wales and home and away losses to France, constitutes a fairly average return and while the win against Italy last weekend was Farrell s first away win, it doesn’t by itself signal a marked improvement.
Victory in one of their remaining two Guinness Six Nation fixtures, against a Scotland side still in championship contention, away on 14 March, and against England in Dublin six days later would mark progress, says the former Ireland hooker.

Former Ireland coach Eddie O Sullivan believes we are not going anywhere with regard to Italy s continued participation in the Guinness Six Nations, while adding that for the moment we could be better off with a five-nation tournament.
Since joining the expanded Six Nations tournament in 2000, Italy have won just 12 of the 108 games they have played so far, with their last win coming in 2015.
As things stand, they are guaranteed a place in the competition for another four years. With no real sign of major improvement in the short term, there have been calls for a promotion/relegation series of games with Romania and Georgia or indeed letting a South Africa or Argentina be included to make the Six Nations even more competitive.
In time, Carbery could solve a lot of Ireland s problems without replacing Sexton
