In the world of wind ensembles, there are certain names that are as familiar to the high school band nerd as the internationally renowned soloists. Beyond the household classics like Beethoven and Mozart, there are the likes of Sousa and Persichetti, known for more recent hallmarks of band literature. Delving just beyond the standards and into music less conventional for its era, you’ll hear the name Percy Grainger or maybe Henry Cowell, composer of “Shoonthree,” a ballad from the Lawrence University Wind Ensemble’s repertoire this term. Grainger and his contemporaries were known for a simultaneous revival of folk tunes and push toward unconventional composition, and their work has come to be regarded as innovative, expanding the boundaries of modern musical literature.

The Australia Ensemble celebrated its post-pandemic return to the live stage with a program dominated by jaunty breeziness and cheer, leaping into the first work, Percy Grainger’s arrangement of
Shepherd’s Hey, with a musical kick of the heels.
This was the first of a bracket of Three Folksongs, which had in turn been further arranged for piano trio and clarinet by clarinettist David Griffiths and Ian Young in an adaptation the composer would only have applauded.

Martin High School Band Director Bobby Castro will serve as a presenter at the Organization of American Kodaly Educators National Conference./
At any given time, be it virtually or in person, you will always find Martin High School’s “La Banda del Animo” perfecting its skills.
It’s no surprise that behind every great award-winning band is a director leading them with pride and passion while diligently working on methods and techniques to instill in the students.
Martin High School band director Bobby Castro adds a method of singing into the use of instrument playing and musical visuals. This technique assists the students in becoming more musically inclined. Castro believes students can be better musicians by incorporating singing during their music rehearsals. The voice is one of the principles of the Music Kodaly Method.
