A few weeks ago, we wrote that “political support for legalizing recreational cannabis in Rhode Island may finally be reaching a critical mass.” It seems our prediction was premature and it is becoming more likely that the General Assembly may not pass a bill before the close of its legislative session around the end of June.
What changed? Several things seem to be holding up approval. First, there are competing bills in the Rhode Island Senate from Governor McKee and Senate leadership, and the parties have yet to reconcile the bills and work out a satisfactory compromise. In addition, House Speaker Joseph Shekarchi recently stated legalization is “inevitable” but that he is “unsure” that legalization would happen this year. At the same time, the business community is concerned that the bills proposed so far do not adequately protect employers and the workplace.

It appears that political support for legalizing recreational cannabis in Rhode Island may finally be reaching a critical mass. The details of
how Rhode Island might go about legalizing recreational cannabis and not
whether to do it are now the subject of legislative hearings and maneuvering at the Rhode Island State House.
There are two bills under discussion. Both would legalize the possession of certain amounts of marijuana for adults 21 years and older, and both would organize a system of private retail locations to be licensed to sell recreational cannabis as soon as Spring 2022.
4 New States May Legalize Cannabis In 2021
So far in 2021the cannabis industry as a whole has been able to grow at an exponential rate. This current growth has also played a part in the better days of trading of some of the top marijuana stocks. For example, when word started to circulate about better cannabis legislation in the U.S. some cannabis stocks started to perform better in the market. Right there is a big push for ending cannabis prohibition in the United States.
Making cannabis federally legal will open more doors for the industry in its entirety. Along with federal cannabis, reform comes more states that are looking to pass some form of state-level cannabis legislation. By more states going legal will only add more value to the U.S. cannabis industry as well as give a bit more of a push for Congress to legalize cannabis on a federal level.
PROVIDENCE Former Senate Majority Leader John “Jack” Ravens is set to take a seat on the state Public Utilities Commission after winning confirmation Tuesday.
Despite the opposition of some senators who argue that Revens lacks the experience in energy and utilities issues that would qualify him for the $139,000-a-year position, his appointment was all but assured after he secured the support of Senate President Dominick Ruggerio and other members of Senate leadership.
Indeed, it was two members of the leadership team Majority Leader Michael McCaffrey and Majority Whip Maryellen Goodwin who spoke in support of Revens before the 29-to-9 vote in favor of his appointment to the commission that sets electric, gas and water rates in Rhode Island and implements state energy policies.

The Rhode Island identifier would help people view the Warwick-based airport as a good alternative to Logan International Airport in Boston, according to Iftikhar Ahmad, President and CEO of the Rhode Island Airport Corporation.
