Consultation on LGBTQ campaigner Mark Ashton memorial approved Mark Ashton 1986 CC&G Mayor, DUP Councillor Mark Fielding A motion calling for consultation with the family of LGBTQ campaigner Mark Ashton over a memorial within Causeway Coast and Glens Borough was passed by members of the Corporate Policy and Resources Committee. Mark Ashton moved to Portrush at a young age and went to the catering college in the town. After completing his studies, he moved to London in 1978 where he became an influential figure in the Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners movement during the miners’ strike. Mark was diagnosed with HIV/AIDS and was admitted to Guy’s Hospital on January 30, 1987. He died 12 days later at the age of 26. A plaque was dedicated to him in London, with a garden in memory of him also built in Paris.

Child poverty motion defeat is overturned Councillors have overturned a decision not to write to the Minister for Communities on the issue. Reporter: );   ); A council committee decision not to write to the Minister for Communities about rising levels of child poverty has been overturned at a full council meeting. The council will now write to the Minister asking her to convene a child poverty task force to set out how the Department will reduce child poverty over the next decade. An amendment to pass the issue to local MLAs to be raised at Stormont was passed at last month s Leisure and Development Committee.
