The Victorian government has received a Memorandum of Understanding from the federal government for its plan to build a dedicated quarantine facility in the state.
Melbourne will remain under lockdown for another week as concerns remain over COVID-19 transmission between strangers. However, some restrictions will ease for regional Victoria.
Melbourne’s northern suburbs COVID cluster has grown to nine cases after four new household contacts tested positive for the virus, but Chief Health Officer Brett Sutton maintains the new restrictions should “reduce the risk” of transmission.
Victorian health authorities announced new restrictions for Metropolitan Melbourne beginning at 6pm on Tuesday as the cluster grows to nine cases across three households.
Indoor gatherings will be limited to a maximum of five people, and public gatherings will be capped at 30, while a compulsory indoor mask mandate will be introduced for everybody over the age of 12 including secondary school students.
The chief health officer said the new restrictions announced earlier on Tuesday were “sensible and proportionate” despite the four new cases confirmed in the afternoon.

Victorian Shadow Police Minister David Southwick says we are seeing “again more bungles” from the state government as restrictions are implemented amid the growing cluster in Melbourne’s north.
