Police are searching for a driver involved in a single-vehicle crash near Cessnock, which put a man in hospital.
About 1.30pm yesterday, a blue Ford Falcon was travelling east on Abernethy Street, Abernethy, when the vehicle left the road and hit a tree stump.
The front seat passenger, 28-year-old man, was taken to John Hunter Hospital in a serious condition.
Police have been told the driver fled the scene without rendering assistance prior to the arrival of emergency services.
Officers established a crime scene, with the Metropolitan Crash Investigation Unit commencing an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
As inquiries continue into the whereabouts of the driver, police are urging anyone who may have witnessed the crash or who may have dashcam footage or CCTV of the incident and the moments after to contact police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Girl suffers leg fracture in fail to stop crash – Central West
Police from the Metropolitan Crash Investigation Unit are appealing for information after a child was hit by a trailbike in the state’s Central West yesterday.
About 7.30pm (Tuesday 2 March 2021), a six-year-old girl was in the driveway of a home on Kurim Avenue, Orange, when she was struck by a trailbike that came out of Edye Park.
The girl suffered a fractured leg and was taken to Orange Base Hospital where she remains in a stable condition.
The rider of the trailbike fled the scene.
A crime scene was established as investigations got underway.
