Tackling Homelessness Among LGBTIQ+ Victorians

VIC Premier The Andrews Labor Government will deliver specialised services for Victorians in the lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and gender diverse, intersex and queer (LGBTIQ+) community, so those experiencing or at risk of homelessness have the support they need. Minister for Housing Richard Wynne today announced that tenders are open for LGBTIQ+ organisations and specialist homelessness services to jointly run a new LGBTIQ+ Homelessness Support Service. LGBTIQ+ Victorians are at least twice as likely to experience homelessness than the broader population, due to factors including discrimination, family rejection, and intimate partner violence. The new service will help more LGBTIQ+ Victorians avoid the devastating impacts of homelessness, by breaking down the barriers they face when trying to access specialist homelessness services, along with accompanying services such as mental health and alcohol and other drug support.

Victorian government urged to impose new levy to help fund affordable and social housing

Advertisement The Committee for Melbourne has recommended a bushfire-style levy be imposed on Victorian homes and businesses to raise crucial funds for a massively expanded 40-year affordable housing program. The Andrews government plans to build 12,000 social and affordable homes by 2024, at a cost of $5.3 billion – the largest investment ever made in social housing in the state. A bushfire-style levy could help pay for more affordable housing, the Committee for Melbourne says. Richmond social housing stoush a proxy for Labor-Green election battle in 2022

Advertisement The chance to build social housing next to Collingwood Town Hall is all but lost, after Housing Minister Richard Wynne said he would no longer work with the Greens-dominated local council on a housing project, in a fight that foreshadows the 2022 state election in his marginal seat. Yarra Council – which covers inner-Melbourne suburbs such as Fitzroy and Richmond – this week knocked back a plan to build 100 new social and affordable housing units on council land, a plan the state government had made clear would attract significant funding under its $5.3 billion “big build” social housing program. Eddy Court Reserve was part of the area being considered for the affordable housing development.
