Joining Murder Hornets, and Lion s Mane jellyfish, is the Vinegaroon, which has been dubbed the, Land Lobster From Hell. Big Bend National Park posted a photo of this nightmarish arachnid that is emerging from the Summer rains right now. It s about 3 inches long and when it feels threatened it can shoot a nonpoisonous acid spray. The park posted a photo of this acid spraying creature with the explanation that, Summer rains bring vinegaroons out of their burrows in search of food and love. Vinegaroons are about 3 inches long and relatively benign unless you happen to annoy them. They can pinch with their heavy mouthparts (pedipalps) and shoot a well-aimed spray of 85% acetic acid (vinegar) from the base of their whip to protect themselves.

First off, contrary to many stories you ll read about them, they re not actually lobsters. Their scientific name is Thelyphonida. They are commonly known as whip scorpions, even though they aren t actually scorpions, they just look like them, or vinegarroons, because they can squirt acetic acid at you, which is basically what vinegar is. They are currently in the news cycle because Big Bend National Park in Texas shared this post over the weekend of a vinegarroon spotted in their park.
