The floral and the classical
Whether or not you’re a fan of Coronation Chicken, it’s hard not to admire the woman credited with inventing it. With ‘Constance Spry and the Fashion for Flowers’ (17 May–26 September), the
Garden Museum celebrates a figure with as many unexpected facets as that curious dish has ingredients. I’m looking forward to seeing some of Spry’s exuberant and unusual floral arrangements recreated (kale and artichoke extravaganzas, Instagrammers? Spry got there first), and discovering more about this one-time Hackney headmistress who provided blooms for the Queen’s coronation and inspiration for the floral paintings of her romantic partner, Gluck.
Bring It On
A West End run or national tour of the best loved musical can cost millions to stage and market – usually a three to six month campaign ahead of opening night. Consequently, with social distancing and other restrictions in place due to the pandemic, from a business point of view it s easy to understand why their approach to reopening the big shows has been cautious, to say the least.
With no insurance and no firm guarantees from the government, who can blame them. Just look at what happened when they tried to rescue last year s panto season with a limited number of Covid aware productions. Disaster.

Bill Morneau had been finance minister for only 36 days when he first attempted to do something about runaway housing prices and mortgage debt. He announced in December 2015 that the minimum downpayment for an insured mortgage would in two months rise to 10 per cent from five per cent on the portion of the loan that exceeds $500,000.
It was a risky move for Morneau, a first-time member of Parliament from Toronto, since it would irritate constituents who had become wealthier by owning real estate from the beginning of the housing boom. But a response was overdue. Household debt had exploded to record levels and Canada had become vulnerable to a financial crisis.
