Over the past month, several grizzly bears have been confirmed in the area of Ophir Creek area northeast of Avon. The sightings were in close proximity to cattle calving grounds on local ranches.

LEWISTOWN, Mont. - The U.S. Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services euthanized a grizzly bear after it was confirmed to have killed a cow in the Big Snowy Mountains south of Lewistown. The bear was first reported the week before, after a remote camera captured images of it feeding on a cow carcass, Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks (FWP) reports.  After a second cow carcass was found with signs of a bear nearby, traps were set. The 447-pound male bear was estimated to be 4 to 6 years old, and was trapped on private land Wednesday morning. Following consultation with Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and USDA Wildlife Services the bear was euthanized.

Montana Fish, Wildlife, and Parks said in a news release that the bear was first reported last week after a remote camera captured images of it feeding on a cow carcass. Traps were set over the weekend following the discovery of a second cow carcass with bear sign nearby. Wildlife Services technicians confirmed evidence that the bear had killed both cows.

The 447-pound (203-kilogram) male bear had been photographed eating a dead cow in late April by a remote camera set up by a landowner. Traps for the grizzly were set over the weekend after a second cow carcass was discovered and wildlife workers found evidence the bear had killed both cows, Montana Fish Wildlife and Parks spokesman Greg Lemon said.
