NEW HANOVER â The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation has announced that the construction of a replacement of the closed New Hanover Square Road bridge over Swamp Creek will begin Monday.
The bridge was closed in September 2018 following a bridge inspection that found severe deterioration of the superstructure and bridge deck.
The $2.7 million project is not scheduled to be complete until the summer of 2022.
New Hanover Square Road motorists will continue to be detoured over Route 73 (Big Road), Route 663 (Charlotte Street), and Swamp Pike throughout construction.

The 117-foot-long bridge is located between Swamp Picnic Road and Heldebeidel Road.
In addition to the bridge replacement, the project scope also includes replacement of the culvert over an unnamed tributary, addition of shoulders, upgraded guide rail, and other miscellaneous construction.
