The world s most misunderstood novel

The Great Gatsby is synonymous with parties, glitz and glamour – but this is just one of many misunderstandings about the book that began from its first publication.

Few characters in literature or indeed life embody an era quite so tenaciously as Jay Gatsby does the Jazz Age. Almost a century after he was written into being, F Scott Fitzgerald s doomed romantic has become shorthand for decadent flappers, champagne fountains and never-ending parties. Cut loose by pop culture from the text into which he was born, his name adorns everything from condominiums to hair wax and a limited-edition cologne (it contains notes of vetiver, pink pepper and Sicilian lime). It s now possible to lounge on a Gatsby sofa, check in at the Gatsby hotel, even chow down on a Gatsby sandwich – essentially a supersize, souped-up chip butty.

Back in 2012, that cinematic track closed only one story: the dystopian narrative that flows through the LP. Listening now, one year after Neil Peart s death from brain cancer, the words inevitably carry more weight an almost prescient sense of finality, both for Rush and the drummer and lyricist himself. The Garden, like the rest of
Clockwork Angels, arose from Peart s desire to create a fictional world with his words. The prog-rock trio had gone conceptual before on specific songs, including 2112 and the two-part Cygnus X1, but never across an entire album. And inspired by the futuristic steampunk style of his sci-fi novelist friend Kevin J. Anderson (who would later co-author a book expanding on this very project), he created a story set in a world lit only by fire.

Tobias Lindholm is a screenwriting master - if not the master - of sombre, research-based, unflashy thrillers. Indeed, you could call his films and TV shows “anti-thrillers”, in the way they portray events steeped in all the trappings of suspense with methodical, procedural calm. Eschewing all the bells and whistles - attention-drawing camera moves, editing, music or histrionic performances - usually associated with this kind of content, Lindholm’s work comes across as bearing more weight and integrity than more sensationalised takes. When Lindholm tells a true story, you believe he’s telling you the truth.
