Casino donates to homeless center

Never let a pandemic closed coffee shop waste to-go cups where there’s a need at the Payson Homeless and Homeless Veterans Initiative Warming Center. The Mazatzal Hotel & Casino recently made a large donation of paper goods to the warming center operated by PHHVI. Staff said most of the paper goods came from the closed Coffee Korner in the casino. Penny DeGroot, treasurer for PHHVI couldn’t contain her excitement when she posed with grandson Ronnie when the two received the donation. She told casino staff this donation will now allow PHHVI to provide warm drinks and soup with their to-go dinners.

Why the Town of Payson can only supports certain charities

Back in July, Payson Mayor Tom Morrissey floated a resolution that would add a line item in the budget for the nonprofit Payson Homeless & Homeless Veterans Initiative. The justification for that ask stated PHHVI provides, “public services that are either not provided for by the Town directly or that may be enhanced through an agreement of three parties.” Already three local nonprofits receive financial support from the town for the services they provide: the chamber of commerce (Visitors Center), the Payson Senior Center (Beeline Bus and Meals on Wheels) and the Humane Society of Central Arizona (animal services). When Morrissey asked the council to approve the resolution in July, the council pushed back with fears of opening the funding floodgates to all nonprofits in town. They instead asked for more time to consider his request and get a presentation from PHHVI.

Find a way to give back this Martin Luther King Jr Day

“Everybody can be great, because everybody can serve,” said Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. In 1994, Congress designated the Martin Luther King Jr. federal holiday as the nation’s first day of service and charged the Corporation for National and Community Service, the federal agency for volunteering and service, with leading this effort. Taking place each year on the third Monday in January, the MLK Day of Service is the only federal holiday observed as a national day of service — a “day on, not a day off.” This year, as part of the inauguration of President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris, they have asked the country to celebrate the spirit of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by hosting service events that focus on COVID-19 relief and address challenges that have been exacerbated by the pandemic, such as poverty, hunger, racial injustice, homelessness, mental health, and educational disparities.
