There are echoes of a familiar and not-so-distant past in the litany of woes and losses that have engulfed Credit Suisse this year.
The $US4.7 billion ($6.1 billion) of losses from its exposure to the implosion of hedge fund Archegos Capital; the multi-billion exposures of the bank and, more particularly, its clients to the abrupt demise of Greensill Capital and its related exposures to the Greensill-funded steel empire of Sanjeev Gupta are the latest in a series of embarrassing misadventures over the past year.

PALM BEACH, Fla. John F. Thomas, 76, was called home to his heavenly Father on Easter Day, April 4, 2021, after a 19-month battle with pancreatic cancer.
He was born in Boston and raised in Youngstown, the son of Dr. John H. Thomas and Flora Thomas. He attended Syracuse University, where he earned a BA and then an MBA in marketing and finance. He was also a devoted member and lifelong supporter of the Psi Upsilon fraternity.
At Syracuse, he met his wife, then Barbara St. Clair, to whom he was married 48 years and fathered two children, Molly and Brenner. Their loving partnership took them from Syracuse to Florida, where he began his long tenure at Paine Webber / UBS in Palm Beach. During his more than three decades there, Thomas was given every promotion available to an investment executive, achieving the title of senior vice president, Investments in 1987. Richard H. Long
The family, friends and community of Richard H. Long have lost a great man. Born in Lincoln, Nebraska, in 1934, Richard was a hard worker from an early age, and even as a small child he worked long hours at his family’s dry-cleaning business.
One of his jobs for many years was to clean out the industrial-sized dryers, where he would find many interesting trinkets that had fallen out of customer’s pockets. This was the beginning of a lifelong hobby of collecting things, including one of his first collections: miniature pocket-knives, some of them not even a half-inch long.
