ORANGE The group dedicated to breathing new life into “The Friendly Town” has completed its Orange Historical Walking Map brochure project to help residents and visitors alike better appreciate the area’s past.
The Orange Revitalization Partnership started the project, inspired by its president and former state Rep. Denise Andrews, in 2018, and welcomed a handful of people who explored Orange’s central downtown area, plotted out a pathway and picked which historical buildings to include in the brochure, ultimately deciding on structures relevant to the Industrial Revolution.
The Cape Fear area is home to more than 80 unsolved murder cases.
While detectives in the tri-county area work tirelessly to solve cold cases, lack of evidence and information are largely the reasons homicides have gone unsolved for years.
These are unsolved cases, and are never really cold
Lt. Israel West with the Brunswick Sheriff s Office Detective Unit said, We don t have a cold case unit, we have an unsolved case unit. Our cases are unsolved until they are solved. We do not use the term cold case.
The Brunswick sheriff s office didn t have an unsolved case unit until 2016.

In the center of Orange is a stone drinking fountain with a history all its own. The fountain was erected by the Woman’s Christian Temperance Union in town. “The WCTU fountain has been a fixture in the center of Orange since 1904, although not always in the same location,” said Janice Lanou, member of the Orange Walking Tour Brochure Committee. “If you look at old postcards of downtown Orange, your eye eventually goes to the fountain, dwarfed by the Lamb’s block at the corner of West Main Street and South Main Street. Time proved it to be an unsuitable location as the fountain was damaged several times by large trucks turning the sharp corner in front of it. In its present home, diagonally across the Square, it is safe from traffic and is more visible to the public.”
