Administrative Office of Pa. Courts warns of reported phone scam

Pennsylvania’s Administrative Office of Pennsylvania Courts (AOPC) is advising the public to be on the lookout for a recently reported phone scam.
The scam involves calls that “spoof” or mimic the AOPC’s telephone number, the AOPC is warning. During the spoof call, those being targeted are told of alleged unpaid court fines and outstanding fees. Should the fees not be paid, the caller threatens to place the individual on the Pennsylvania sex offender registry.
The AOPC advises that it will never place calls or solicit payment by credit card, gift card, or any other means of electronic funds transfer for any reason.

The Administrative Office of Pennsylvania Courts is warning the public of a phone scam that involves the caller threatening to add people to a sex offender registry if they do not share payment information.
When people receive the phone call, they are told they have unpaid court fines and outstanding fees, and if they don’t give payment information over the phone the caller threatens to contact the police and have them placed on the Pennsylvania sex offender registry, says AOPC.
AOPC says they will never place calls or solicit payment by credit card, gift card or any other means of electronic funds transfer for any reason, according to a statement it released on Wednesday.

The agency that oversees the state s court systems is warning people about a phone scam involving the agency.
The Administrative Office of Pennsylvania Courts has reported that the phone scam spoofs, or mimics, the AOPC s phone number, and those targeted are told they have unpaid court fines or outstanding fees.
The caller threatens to put targets on the state s Megan s Law sexual offender registry if they don t make payments, according to the AOPC.
The AOPC never makes such calls and never seeks payment by credit card, gift card, or any other means of electronic funds transfer for any reason, according to a Tuesday-evening news release.

The Administrative Office of Pennsylvania Courts in Harrisburg is warning state residents of a new phone scam in which callers threaten to place victims on the state’s sexual offender registry if they don’t immediately forward unpaid court fines or fees.
“We wanted to get the word out there as soon as we heard about it. The office is advising the public to stay vigilant against such scams,” said AOPC spokesperson Stacey Witalec.
She said the new scam involves calls that mimic the AOPC’s telephone number.
