In Limbo, Amir El-Masry’s Syrian refugee character Omar has far more depth than simply a war-ravaged victim. “Through the movie, Omar is constantly talking about Syria in a positive light and saying that he actually wants to go back,” the actor notes. In “Limbo,” Omar carries the case containing his oud the lute-like Middle Eastern stringed instrument everywhere he goes, like a shield. Or a comforter.
That’s because Omar (played with poker-faced cool by Egyptian British actor Amir El-Masry, from the TV series “Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan” and “Industry”) is a stranger in a very strange land, where he may need to defend and soothe himself in equal measure.
