Many of the dead and injured at the Lag Ba omer stampede on Mount Meron Thursday night were from the insular Toldot Aharon Hassidic sect, which is based in Jerusalem. The stampede took place during the lighting of the bonfire by the current Rebbe (spiritual leader).
It is perhaps the most insular, well-organized and cohesive of the groups that make up Israel’s haredi (ultra-Orthodox) community; any type of intervention in its domestic affairs is tantamount to a total usurping of the community s belief system.

Human Rights Watch has published a new report that recycles old, debunked charges to portray Israel as engaging in, among other things, apartheid, a crime against humanity. The report, A Threshold Crossed – Israeli Authorities and the Crimes of Apartheid and Persecution, is far from the first attack against Israel by Human Rights Watch.
Unfortunately, the organization has a long history of anti-Israel agitation and propaganda, perhaps best illustrated by the facts about Joe Stork, who served for many years as HRW’s Deputy Director of Middle East issues. Before being hired by HRW, Stork openly supported Palestinian terror attacks against Jewish civilians, and opposed any and all peace treaties between Israel and Arab states.

Israeli intelligence officials have linked the violence in Israel’s capital to Friday night’s Gaza rocket barrage, and the subsequent rocket fire on Saturday night. They expressed concern that Israeli attacks on Gaza will strengthen the relationship between Hamas and Israeli Arabs.
The Israeli army and Hamas have exchanged messages through intermediaries, the gist of which is that if Hamas refrains from additional rocket fire, Israel will not pursue further retaliation.
