Hawaii Hawaii Hawaii (2019), the title track to Joe Cutler’s latest release for NMC, is a resplendent, witty and otherworldly saxophone
concerto, expertly performed here by its commissioners – the BBC Concert Orchestra and soloist Trish Clowes. The piece is a loose setting of David Mitchell’s dystopian story ‘An Orison of Sonmi~451’ from the novel
Cloud Atlas, charting the awakening of the young protagonist as she realises there might be more to life than working as an enslaved fast-food waitress incentivised by holidaying holograms. The breathy first movement recalls Tōru Takemitsu, while the energetic, game-show conveyor-belt second movement is Gershwinian in its colour. Clowes demonstrates a deep understanding of Cutler’s fascinating musical language throughout – particularly in the sticky, darkly resonant third movement.
Symphony created from data tracking nation’s stress levels throughout 2020
An orchestra plays the Fitbit Stress Symphony (Fitbit)
A composer has created a symphony based on data tracking the public’s stress levels throughout 2020.
Ben Palmer produced the original piece with producer and sound designer Aston Rudi based on data from the Fitbit fitness trackers of members of the public.
Data from search trends and social media sentiment also went into the piece, called the Fitbit Stress Symphony.
Mr Palmer said the process of putting the piece together was “rather like writing a film score for the year 2020, albeit one compressed into a three-minute pop song”.
In a poll recently commissioned by Fitbit, 87% or Irish respondents admitted to feeling stress in 2020 due to problems with their physical health, job concerns, or the news surrounding Covid-19.
Almost half of those polled, at 42%, admitted that this had been the most stressful year of their lives.
Interestingly, more than half of us at 57% turned to music to find moments of calm, and with that in mind Fitbit have created a beautiful piece of music, known as the Fitbit Stress Symphony.
Recorded in London s iconic Barbican Theatre by composer and conductor Ben Palmer, with producer and sound engineer Aston Rudi as well as the 20-piece Covent Garden Sinfonia, this piece of music takes you through a very difficult Irish year. There are, however, many moments of hope and joy to be found too.

U15 BURGHFIELD BUFFALOES on Saturday.
The Hurricanes were playing on a freshly laid pitch at Jubilee Park and wasted no time in exploiting it.
New signing Max Stokes powered his way through the midfield before hitting a strike which came off the post but Christian Rowbotham was on hand to smash home the rebound to take the lead.
Harvey Herbert doubled the lead after hitting an unstoppable shot before turning provider. He jinked past two Burghfield defenders before crossing for Sam Archibald to finish from inside the six-yard box.
Burghfield did have their moments in the first half but the Henley defence kept them out. Olly Saunders had to make a last-ditch tackle to stop a certain goal and Matthew Dippenaar had to be at his best to keep out the visitor’s tricky right winger. Joe Winpenny, playing at centre back, marshalled the back line well.
