The Conservatives have won a by-election in Frenchay and Downend, restoring their majority on South Gloucestershire Council to five.
Mother-of-three Liz Brennan replaces former deputy leader and fellow Tory Jon Hunt, who stepped down in August last year after nine years of service.
Liz Brennan with South Gloucestershire council leader Toby Savage Mum-of-three Liz Brennan has been elected as the new Conservative Councillor for Frenchay and Downend following a wave of local support for her campaign in the recent by-election. Having secured 1,819 votes, the outcome of the by-election sees the South Gloucestershire Council Conservative Group retain the seat, which was vacated by Jon Hunt last year, and restores their majority in the Council Chamber to five. In joining South Gloucestershire Council, and existing Conservatives Councillors Ben Burton and James Griffiths to represent the Frenchay and Downend Ward, Liz brings with her a wealth of campaigning experience, which earlier this year helped her to secure additional support for Downend High Street as part of a £120,000 Council investment, following an impassioned call to the Council’s Cabinet.
AN RAF base has been gifted a sword for its humanitarian efforts. RAF Brize Norton has received the Firmin Sword of Peace after the station was deemed to have made the most valuable contribution to humanitarian activities of all RAF bases. The award comes following work in 2019 which saw support during national disasters as well as in the local community. In particular, Brize Norton was recognised for its work in Africa in the wake of Cyclone Idai, the conduct of search and rescue operations in the South Atlantic, and the recovery of British nationals with suspected Lassa fever from Sierra Leone.
