LONDON, April 26 Sterling gained against the dollar and the euro today, ignoring political noise stemming from allegations against Britain’s Conservative government as positioning data showed investors still bullish on the currency.
The pound appeared unaffected by the news and gained against the dollar for a second week on Friday, helped by better than expected economic data that indicated Britain’s economy may be rebounding from its worst annual contraction in 300 years.
LONDON (Reuters) - Britain looks set to see faster economic growth than the United States this year as the country races ahead with its vaccination programme after its slump in 2020, Goldman Sachs said on Sunday. The bank said in a note to clients that it now expects British gross domestic product to grow by a striking 7.8% this year, above our expectations for the U.S. A Reuters poll of analysts published on April 13 showed an average forecast for growth of 5.0% in the UK, the world s fifth-biggest economy in 2021. The International Monetary Fund has projected a 5.3% expansion. But since those forecasts were made there have been signs of an acceleration in the pace of recovery with the country now having given a first coronavirus vaccine to more than half of its total population.

European markets are set to rise this morning as confidence grows about the progress being made with vaccines in the UK and Europe, oil and gold are on the move as the crisis in India deteriorates, and the Turkish lira slides toward an all-time low against the dollar. Share:
FTSE 100 set to open higher
The FTSE 100 is called to open 0.2% higher this morning at 6932.0 after ending last week at 6917.4.
European markets to follow higher
The Euro STOXX Index is set to open 0.2% higher today at 4013.5 from 4005.6 at the end of play last week.
