Vancouver-based legal software company Clio has become Canada’s latest tech “unicorn” after raising US$110 million in financing it hopes to use to launch an acquisition strategy and boost hiring.
The deal gives Themis Solutions Inc. which operates as Clio a valuation of more than US$1 billion, a milestone for tech startups known as “unicorn” status, and comes just a year and a half after it announced what was then the largest venture-capital investment for a Canadian company.

(Reuters) -Canadian Pacific Railway Ltd on Saturday welcomed the U.S. Surface Transportation Board s (STB) decision to uphold a 2001 waiver it granted to Kansas City Southern being applicable to the merger of the two companies.
The two companies will proceed with an application under the standards in the STB s pre-2001 major merger rules, according to a statement by Canadian Pacific.
The STB, charged with the economic regulation of various modes of surface transportation, primarily freight rail, on Friday confirmed that the waiver it granted to Kansas City Southern in 2001 is applicable to the proposed friendly combination of the two companies.

Penny Ballem, who is leading B.C.’s immunization program, said Whistler has endured three surges of the virus since January.
“We’ve used aggressive public health measures to the best of our ability to manage them,” Ballem said, adding that the town’s housing situation has also exacerbated attempts to deal with the virus.
“We’re at a place now where we have to get better containment of the surge.”
VCH says the Howe Sound region has the highest rate of COVID-19 of any local health area in the province with the majority of cases in Whistler.
