John Bowes, an education leader known for creative curriculum and financial expertise, has been named superintendent of the Manhattan Beach Unified School District.
Bowes, who is expected to be officially approved by the school board at its July 7 meeting, has served as superintendent of the Davis Joint Unified School District since 2016. Bowes also has South Bay ties, previously serving as an assistant superintendent at the Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District. Bowes will take over from Mike Matthews, who has served as MBUSD superintendent since 2010.
School Board president Jennifer Fenton said the hiring of Bowes comes at a critical time. The district lost a significant percentage of its students during the pandemic and came under fire from parents who were dissatisfied by the pace of the return to in-person instruction.

When the Mira Costa boys volleyball team won the CIF Southern Section title Friday night in front of 1,500 delirious fans in their brand-new gym it felt like the glorious end of an inspiring championship season.
It wasn’t.
It could easily get even more glorious.
Mira Costa will now host a semifinal state championship tournament game Thursday night. If it wins that game, Costa will host the state championship game Saturday night. They were scheduled to play a first-round home game Tuesday night, but that changed Sunday when the Mustangs were given a bye for the quarterfinals.

During his time at the IN4.0 Academy, Ben completed an industry project with BAE Systems and supported its Factory of the Future project, which gave him a valuable insight into the advanced manufacturing and technology sector.
Prior to the academy, Ben felt the stress and pressure of job seeking during the pandemic and planning out his career path after completing a master’s in chemistry at Lancaster University.
Ben said: “I’ve got a young family and I wanted to settle down in a stable career in Lancashire, so the digital sector seemed like a safe area to be in, particularly after the impact of Covid-19, there’s still a huge demand for it.
