Senior Scientist Cuts Ties to Lawrence Lab in Protest of Climate Denier

May 24, 2021 Climate denying scientist Steven Koonin, a darling of the Wall Street Journal editorial page, has a new book of standard climate denial memes, that the right wing media has been pushing. Senior Scientist Ben Santer has cut his long term connections with Lawrence Livermore National Lab in response to a speaking invite the lab extended to Koonin. Above, from my 2017 conversation with Santer, he describes the bogus “Red Team-Blue Team” exercise that Koonin organized under the auspices of the American Physical Society, supposedly to review the Society’s position on climate science. Santer is, with Jim Hansen, and a few others, among the most honored and respected experts in Atmospheric physics, and has a history of extreme courage and tenacity in defending the emerging science of climate over the past 3 decades.

Satellite Measurements of Troposphere Temperature may have Underestimated Global Warming

Satellite Measurements of Troposphere Temperature may have Underestimated Global Warming Written by AZoCleantechMay 25 2021 A new study carried out by climate scientists at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) and their collaborators demonstrates that satellite measurements of the temperature of the troposphere (the lowest region of the atmosphere) might have undervalued global warming in the past four decades. New research by LLNL scientists shows that satellite measurements of the temperature of the troposphere (the lowest region of the atmosphere) may have underestimated global warming over the last 40 years. One of the physical processes they looked at was tropical water vapor like shown in this NASA image. Image Credit: Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.

Top Scientist Cuts Ties With National Lab After It Invited A Climate Denier To Speak

Top Scientist Cuts Ties With National Lab After It Invited A Climate Denier To Speak A federal research facility’s prioritizing a politically connected darling of right-wing media over its own star scientist shows climate denialism’s lasting power. Fox Business Network Steve Koonin has been a frequent commentator on television and in newspapers owned by conservative billionaire Rupert Murdoch. Ben Santer, one of the world’s best-known climate scientists, announced this week he is severing ties with the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory after the federal research facility invited a climate denier to give a book talk this Thursday.  Santer had planned to retire from the lab, where he has worked for 29 years, in September, but would continue his award-winning atmospheric research on a part-time basis and maintain his affiliation.
