Donut County Creator Unveils Anime-Inspired Action Game Neon White
Back in 2018, developer Ben Esposito and Annapurna Interactive gave us Donut County, a quirky little Katamari Damacy-style puzzle game that ended being loved by many – including us – and even garnered several award nominations. So it might be kind of a shock that a new collaboration between the two, Neon White, was unveiled during today’s Nintendo Direct, and that it turned out to be…well, almost the exact opposite kind of game.
Neon White sees players playing as White, as assassin tasked with eradicating demons in Heaven. See, True Believers apparently aren’t allowed to kill anyone, so when there’s a demon infestation, a loophole allows him and the other Neons to take care of the dirty work instead. And whoever does the best job earns the Mechanical Halo, which allows them to stay in Heaven permanently. For the first time in over a year, Nintendo hosted a full-fledged Direct presentation. The latest presentation was focused mostly on games slated to hit Nintendo’s hybrid gaming console, the Switch, sometime during the first half of 2021, though there were a few announcements for games that will hit later than that.
The nearly hour-long event included a slew of titles slated to hit the Switch before the year is half over, including ports for indie games such as
Neon White looks right in the wheelhouse for fans of games like
ULTRAKILL or
Devil May Cry. There’s been a lot of fast-paced retro shooters over the last couple of years, and while
Neon White isn’t going for that same kind of aesthetic, the movement does look
really slick.
Sure, having the ability to dash mid-air is absolutely not new. Almost every video game borrows ideas and mechanics from one another. But it’s the context of how everything all comes together that can make a game stick, and I love the randomised card element here.
Neon White looks like a speedrunning dream, but the extra story elements between all the assassins seems neat as well. No word on whether we’ll be getting
