Updated 12:44 PM;
The coronavirus pandemic did not slow construction in the Lehigh Valley’s second largest city and very few local businesses have closed compared to Bethlehem’s sister cities, the mayor says.
During his final state of the city address, the Mayor Bob Donchez touted how Bethlehem continues to be a magnet for residential and business development and highlighted how the city is support local shops, makers and restaurants.
Since he took office in 2014, the city’s approved 1,059 multi-family housing units and watched construction take off. Nearly 3,000 permits were pulled in Bethlehem in 2020 for projects with an estimated $305 million construction costs despite the global pandemic. This is on par with the 3,434 permits pulled in 2019 with an estimated construction cost of $308 million, Donchez said.
Allentown and Bethlehem schools would be financial winners under a supplemental school funding proposal led by state Rep. Mike Schlossberg intended to give out supplements to 100 underfunded districts statewide.
