The New York Catskills, an area that was once a resort mecca, where food and entertainment prevailed, has made a comeback with the opening of several boutique inns and large-scale resorts.
Generations of families, including mine, have returned to the area every summer seeking tranquility and the perfect getaway. The enormous commitment of the newly opened, lodging options, has laid the foundation to restore both the luster and allure of this beautiful region of the southern Catskills.
For me, it represents a homecoming of sorts. It is in here, where it all began, having grown up working in several of the now sadly defunct famous resorts (ie. The Concord, Kutsherâs, The Browns, Grossingerâs) that both defined the Catskills and attracted the masses for decades. It is here, where I gained both the passion and experience that ignited my career in hospitality and food. 1969 s Woodstock Festival is widely viewed as a musical watershed and historical snapshot; the dusk of a decade and metaphorical end of a more open-hearted era.
Approximately 500,000 people were eventually attracted to the legendary promotional poster billing Woodstock as An Aquarian Exposition: 3 Days of Peace and Music.
And while Woodstock was a weekend in which Otis Redding, Jimi Hendrix, The Who and Janis Joplin became immediate icons, the music was not the sole attraction.
