As the deadly coronavirus was making its way across the commonwealth in the spring, Lycoming County Coroner Charles (Chuck) E. Kiessling Jr. contacted local hospitals and nursing homes, telling them to alert his office of any COVID-19 deaths.
He informed them state law stipulates that, whenever a death was caused by a pandemic, the coroner’s office must be notified.
“The Coroner Law requires that any death caused by a contagious disease that constitutes a public health hazard must be reported to the coroner’s office,” Kiessling, the county’s coroner for 20 years, said.
