Virginia brewers produce special beer to honor women in the brewing business By: Julio Avila and last updated 2021-03-15 10:15:37-04 NORFOLK, Va. - Maker s Craft Brewery, in conjunction with a handful of other local breweries, will team up to create a special brew in honor of Women s History Month and to recognize the women in the beer brewing industry. Michele Lowney is the brewery s head brewer and has been in the brewing business for over 20 years. Her career took her across the globe, from Colorado here in the U.S. to places like the United Kingdom. She said when she started, there were not a lot of women in the beer brewing industry.

Susan Miller, co-founder and co-owner, Jacksonville Miller left her nine-to-five to join the beer business and manage the on-site tavern when her son Brian opened the brewery. They are supported by the rest of their family. Toni Derby, co-founder and CFO, Tampa Derby helped launch the Brew Bush with her son Anthony Derby. When he was a student at the University of Colorado, he realized a transportation service was necessary for those trying to visit various breweries. They now offer public and private tours to local breweries as well as an array of their own beers.

Fresno Fire Department ignites change in male-dominated profession KFSN Share: The Fresno Fire Department currently has five female firefighters and a female fire chief. In a few years, all six are planning to retire. Before they do, they re igniting a change in the male-dominated profession. Chief Kerri Donis has served with the department for nearly two decades and says the perception that women can t be firefighters is in the distant past. We have broken a lot of barriers and shown that we can do the job just like anyone else, Donis said. In 2019, the department launched an aggressive campaign to recruit more women, including a one-day girls empowerment camp.
