MADISON, Wis. – While COVID-19 precautions forced the Boys and Girls Club of Dane County’s annual ‘Helping Hearts’ gala online, the non-profit exceeded its original fundraising goal, raising $377,456.
The money, which will go towards funding the organization’s programs throughout the year, was raised in just an hour and a half’s time.
“There’s been a lot of work that has gone into this,” said Faith Michon Ross, a Resource Development Manager with the organization. “Our whole development team has come together and stepped up.”
The school district is investigating after middle schoolers were asked to determine how they would punish a slave in a hypothetical question meant to test their knowledge of Hammurabi’s code.

SUN PRAIRIE, Wis. – Instead of a clear answer, a virtual assignment Monday left sixth-grader Zayvion Hopkins and his mother with more questions.
“He had this look on his face, like I don’t want to do this,” said Zayvion’s mother, Dazarrea Ervins.
Zayvion said the assignment given to his class at Patrick Marsh Middle School within the Sun Prairie Area School District focused on ancient Mesopotamia and King Hammurabi’s Code, with one scenario that posed this question: “A slave stands before you. This slave has disrespected his master by telling him ‘You are not my master!’ How will you punish this slave?”
