Nine-time champions, Super Falcons of Nigeria will face arch-rivals, Black Queens of Ghana in the first round of qualifiers for the 2022 African Women Cup of Nations (AWCON).
The draw for Morocco 2022 AWCON was conducted on Monday in Cairo by Heba Sarwat, the Senior Manager of Women Football & Futsal at the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
Egyptian footballer Nadine Ghazy assisted in conducting the draw, Complete Sport reports.
Aside Morocco who have qualified as hosts, the draw saw a record 44 member-associations who will be participating in the qualifying series.
The tournament will be the first edition organised under the format of 12 teams.
The first and second leg fixtures of the first round will be played between June 7 and June 15, while the second round’s first and second leg fixtures will be held between October 18 and October 29.
This will be the first assignment for new Starlets coach Charles Okere, who was appointed on April 13, to replace David Ouma, who left the team on mutual agreement.
Okere, who was serving as an assistant coach with 11-time FKF Premier League champions Tusker, started work immediately and his first task was to lead the team against Zambia in a friendly match in Lusaka, but it was cancelled owing to the coronavirus pandemic.
Banyana Banyana to play Mozambique in first round of 2022 AWCON qualifiers
10 May 2021 – COSAFA champions, Banyana Banyana have been paired against neighbours Mozambique in the first round of the CAF African Women Cup of Nations scheduled for Morocco next year. The first match of the two-legged encounter will be played during the week of 7 – 15 June 2021 while the second leg is scheduled for a week later. Mozambique will be at home in the first leg while Banyana Banyana will host the second leg.
The winner of the Mozambique/South Africa match will meet the winner of the Algeria v Sudan match in the second round to decide on who qualifies for the AWCON tournament in Morocco scheduled for July next year. The second round matches are scheduled for October.
