The ranks of Nigeria’s celebrated democrats, advocates for true federalism and non-tribalists reduced on January 13 with the sudden demise of Rear Admiral Ndubuisi Kanu (retd.). Born in 1943 in Ovim, Isuikwuato Local Government Area of Abia State, Kanu joined the Nigerian Navy in 1962. He thereafter earned a Bsc at the National Defence Academy, India.
His dedication and resilience distinguished him in his chosen career. He was known to have served in varied positions in the naval command ranging from chief of personnel, naval headquarters; flag officer, eastern fleet; flag officer, naval training command; chief of naval operations, naval headquarters and director of logistics, joint operations.

The Chairman, Senate Committee on INEC, Kabiru Gaya, was quoted to have said: âThe joint committee has proposed that if a lady who is not up to 18 years is married, she should be considered to be mature enough and be eligible to vote.â They have proposed a review of the provision in the Electoral Act that pegs the eligibility of voters at 18 years.
