Haitian President Jovenel Moise was killed in an attack at his home before dawn on Wednesday, the country s interim prime minister said, declaring himself in control of the troubled Caribbean country hours later. A group of unidentified individuals raided Moise s private residence in Haiti s capital, Port-au-Prince, at about 1 a.m. local time, according to a statement from Haitian interim Prime Minister Claude Joseph. They gunned down the 53-year-old head of state and wounded his wife, Martine Moise, who was transferred to the U.S. for treatment.

Haiti’s President Jovenel Moise was killed during an attack on his private residence early on Wednesday, according to the country’s acting Prime Minister Claude Joseph, who has declared a state of seige in the country.
The attackers stormed Moise’s home at around 1 a.m. and fatally wounded the head of state, according to the acting prime minister, who described the assassination as a “heinous, inhumane and barbaric act.”

WASHINGTON / PORT-AU-PRINCE - A manhunt is under way to find those responsible for assassinating Haiti s president, Jovenel Moise, at his private residence in a wealthy suburb of the capital, Port-au-Prince, before dawn on Wednesday. Those killers are on the loose, Haitian Ambassador to the United States Bocchit Edmond said Wednesday during a briefing with reporters covering the State Department. We are calling for an international manhunt.
Edmond said Haiti would request U.S. assistance and expertise. A stable Haiti is in the interest of the United States, he said.
