Scott City, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–Scott City didn’t have to go far in its search for its next volleyball coach. At Monday’s USD 466 Board of Education meeting, Lauren Robinson was approved to be the next leader of the Lady Beaver volleyball program.
Robinson isn’t unfamiliar to the program, as she served as an assistant over the past three years, and previously served as the head coach for the eighth grade team for two seasons. She is a 2007 graduate of Scott Community High School, and played for Kyle Carroll during her high school days.
Scott City went 22-15 in 2020, falling to eventual fourth place finisher in Class 3A in Goodland in the sub-state semi-finals. Robinson takes over for Shelby Kite, who stepped down in November after recording a 106-43 mark in four seasons.
Larned, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–More times than not, it is difficult to defeat a team three times in a season. Thursday’s second semi-final matchup between Cimarron and Scott City was a first in the series, as the two teams have not played three times in a season. It was not only the second straight sub-state semi-final matchup between the schools, but it was alos the third straight postseason matchup. The Lady Bluejays would lead for a vast majority of the night, and withstand every Lady Beaver rally, as they advanced to Saturday’s sub-state championship game in Larned with a 51-44 win.

The benefits of networking, for a community and for students connected to that community, were amplified at the February 20 meeting of the Pratt Community College Board of Trustees, via a new phone system that augmented Zoom communication. Several agenda items centered around student achievements and the benefits of being connected to the PCC family were discussed by trustees during the virtual meeting. I have to share a personal call I got from a Pratt Community College student, said trustee board chairman Dwane DeWeese.
DeWeese said his caller told him that he was very pleased with the lineman program that we have here at PCC because not only did he get an excellent education, he stepped right into a job here in Pratt because of the network that went along with it. The student told DeWeese that he had made a very good decision to come here to Pratt, it changed his life.
Sterling, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–The Scott City Lady Beaver team knew it would be a big task to open up Sterling Invitational Tournament play on Monday night against the No. 1 team in Class 2A. Sterling entered 9-0 and have won all but one game by more than 10 points.
The Lady Bears would prove too much, leading wire to wire in a 66-36 victory, spoiling the Lady Beavers debut in the tournament.
Sterling jumped out to a 13-2 lead in the first five minutes, before Scott City got to within seven at 13-6 with 2:16 left in the opening frame. However, the Lady Bears scored the next seven, leading 20-6 in the first minute of the second period. Sterling would slowly nudge their lead larger, never allowing Scott City to go on a run, as they took a 27-12 lead at the break.
Liberal, Kan. (westernkansasnews.com)–It was a tough shooting night for the Scott City Beaver basketball teams on Friday night at the Big House in Liberal, as the Redskins hosted the Beavers in their home opener. Friday’s doubleheader was also the first time that Scott City was able to play in front of parents, after the KSHSAA ruling on Tuesday. The Lady Red would pull away in the second half for a 42-26 win, while the Redskin boys used hot shooting early to propel them to a 53-28 win.
Liberal Girls 42, Scott City 26
Neither team was able to connect from the floor either on, as the teams played to a low scoring battle in the first half. Liberal led 4-3 after one quarter and 13-9 at the break. Scott City got a three-point play from Erika Felker in the second half to get to within 13-12 in the first minute, but the Lady Red would start to pull away after that. Leading 17-14 with 5:34 remaining in the third frame, Liberal used an 11-2 run over the next four minutes to lead 28-1
