Karen Dunbar: My mantra to cope with lockdown? Pals and exercise

SINCE stepping onto the karaoke bar stage 31 years ago, Karen Dunbar has been making people laugh more than a list of pre-election promises. The comedy actor has been making audiences love her with performances on TV’s Chewin’ the Fat, The Karen Dunbar Show and on stage as a stand-up and a panto star. But now, rather unusually, the Ayrshire-born actor isn’t expecting to be assaulted with audience warmth at all. In her new online film role in Distance Remaining, which focuses on the dramatically changed circumstances in the Covid-stricken lives of three characters, Dunbar plays Lindsey, a woman whose moral sat nav has gone on the blink.

LGBT books: 7 powerful queer love stories that moved Naoise Dolan

Author Naoise Dolan chooses seven of her favourite queer novels from recent year and past centuries. I was going to call this piece “the best queer love stories”, but isn’t that exclusivity, that hierarchy, the whole problem with ‘representation’? When art is presented as zero-sum, we tear everything to pieces that doesn’t speak to us personally. In reality, the more queer stories there are, the less burden there is on any book to represent all of us, which would be boring even if it were possible. If I wanted to see myself a million times I’d go to a funhouse. So I won’t pretend my selection is authoritative or complete. Here are seven queer novels from recent years and from past centuries that have moved me immeasurably and that have changed how I think about love.

Now we hear that $1.2 billion is being tossed to Qantas and Virgin on routes to 13 “international” tourist destinations, all but one being marginal and Coalition-held seats. This is the same government that could only manage an additional $25 per week for JobSeekers. They are without shame.

Trio of One Act performers earn Riggs Fine Arts Student of the Week honor

Pierre, SD, USA / DRGNews Mar 9, 2021 4:48 PM Congratulations to Addisyn Gruis, Delaney Engbrecht and Michael VanDeWiele for be selected Performers/Fine Arts Students of the Week. Here is the nomination from Mrs. Hodges: I nominate Addisyn Gruis (Lady Bracknell), Delaney Engbrecht (Gwendolen Fairfax) and Michael VanDeWiele (Jack Worthing) for their performance in the One Act “The Importance of Being Earnest” by Oscar Wilde. These three received superiors for their acting at the State Festival in Brandon Valley. It was wonderful to have the opportunity to work with these talented seniors. Addisyn and Delaney are seasoned actors and really brought their experience to their characters. Michael as a relatively new actor worked hard to create a great character. Congratulations to these actors on their superior performance at State One Acts!
