Wellington scoop co nz » Man without life jacket rescued after dinghy capsizes near Scorching Bay

News from NZ Police A man was rescued today by the Police Maritime Unit after being stranded in the sea near Scorching Bay. Police were notified by an off-duty officer just after midday of a man struggling in the water at Mahanga Bay. Sea conditions were rough with a 25 knot north-westerly wind and a metre swell. One man wearing a life jacket managed to swim to shore, a distance of approximately 240 metres. He then raised the alarm that his mate was still in the water. The Police Maritime Unit on Lady Elizabeth IV was called, and found the other man whose dinghy had sunk. He was clinging to a pool noodle for a flotation device. He was taken to shore aboard the Lady Liz and was treated for mild hypothermia.

“I did the bare minimum [to prepare], which wasn’t really enough.” he said. The alarm was raised by a cyclist who called police after he heard Ellis yelling from the water near Mahanga Bay. By 12.35pm, Mcilraith was hauled aboard the Lady Elizabeth IV off Scorching Bay, where he was treated for mild hypothermia. Supplied Jame Ellis, red shirt, wearing a life jacket, managed to swim to shore while Hamish Mcilraith, left, hung on to a pool noodle. Senior Constable Roscoe Lane said that while the pair had told friends when they expected to return it was unlikely that they would have alerted Maritime police in time.
