Speakers press strong legislation, sustained political commitment to achieve sustainable population growth

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: Senator Syed Shibli Faraz, Federal Minister of Science and Technology, has said that the government is fully committed to ensure universal access to family planning services and is working towards achieving a sustainable population growth rate in light of the Council of Common Interests (CCI) decisions that call for stronger legislation and increased investment on family planning programs in the country.
He made these remarks while speaking at the third meeting of the Parliamentary Forum on Population here on Thursday.

Pakistanis not registering for COVID-19 vaccine is the biggest problem, says health official

Dr Nosheen Hamid says people are not getting themselves registered for the coronavirus vaccine jab.
Says as of now, a little over 2mn people have gotten themselves registered.
Hamid maintains that the government will launch a campaign that would encourage the masses to get vaccinated against Covid-19.
ISLAMABAD: Parliamentary Secretary on Health Dr Nosheen Hamid on Wednesday lamented that People are not getting themselves registered for the coronavirus vaccine jab despite the fact that registrations have been allowed up to the age of 50.
Speaking to media, the senior health official noted: As of now, a little over 2mn people have gotten themselves registered [for the vaccine]. Out of these, 650,000 are healthcare workers.
According to the ‘Global Gender Gap Report 2021’ published by the World Economic Forum , Pakistan ranked 153rd out of 156 countries on the gender parity index. Pakistan ranked seventh.
Islamabad: Pakistan’s coronavirus cases crossed the grim milestone of 700,000 on Wednesday with 4,004 cases reported during the last 24 hours.
The country’s death toll also surged to 15,026 as 102 people lost their lives to the virus during the past day.
The total number of cases in the country stood at 700,188 on Wednesday.
According to the National Health Services, 41,699 tests were conducted for COVID-19 during the last 24 hours that showed the virus positivity rate was 9.6 per cent in the country with active cases jumping to 64,373.
Pakistan’s number of cases has declined slightly in the past two days. On Tuesday the country reported less than 4,000 cases.
A New Model of Civil Society-Establishment Engagement

Any student of Pakistan’s history will tell you that resistance offered to the transgressions of the establishment by the civil society, political parties, thinkers and writers was much more direct in Pakistan in its nature during the 1950s, 1960s, 1970s, and also 1980s. However, from 1990s onwards, a new model of covert cooperation of the civil society-establishment has emerged that is largely driven by both coercion and cooption. It has its pros and cons and we will analyze them.
