One of the oddities of fashion is the see-saw rule. One minute something’s hot, then it’s not, then it’s riding high again and that’s how it is with Breton tops.
Sometimes, a stripey Breton top is the stylish woman’s best friend. It’s hard to think of a style icon in the past 60 years who hasn’t made Bretons look chic or cool or preppy, and of an item of clothing that both the Duchess of Cambridge and Kate Moss wear regularly.
When a Breton shirt is good, it’s very, very good. And then, in between, there are long stretches of time when Breton tops have no style currency whatsoever, and become the boring old thing you wear to do the gardening.

When the first of my friends started to become parents around a decade ago, the baby shower wish list featured a slew of household names. There was the Bugaboo pram, the stacks of Aden & Anais muslins, plus the Anya Hindmarch nappy bag and Stella McCartney babywear if you were a bit fancy.
These brands remain highly desirable, and still dominate the market today, but when I welcomed my own twins in August last year, I discovered that for fashion mums in the know, there is a whole new set of must-haves to aspire to.
