The Times-Reporter My most memorable New Year s Day took place five years ago on a cold, clear morning in another life. We awoke to find a 30-acre lake where there had been pasture the night before. The Arkansas River had been rising ominously for days, and when it got high enough, it always backed up the bayou into our place. But nobody remembered seeing it quite so high. Only about 10 acres around the house and barn remained high and dry. I looked for my favorite cow, Trudy, who d been due to give birth. A great beauty with a sweet disposition, Trudy loved having her ears scratched. Her best friend, Stella, would stand at a distance when Trudy would approach me for petting. Two years earlier, Trudy had delivered a stillborn bull calf. She and Stella had spent hours side by side, nudging the baby to stand.

Lu Ellen Witt Griffin WILMINGTON Lu Ellen Witt Griffin, 93, died peacefully in her sleep Sunday, Dec. 27, 2020. She was much loved and will be greatly missed. She was born Nov. 15, 1927, in Van Lear, Kentucky. She was the daughter of the late Len L. and Dez Witt. She was also preceded in death by her husband, John Charles Griffin; seven siblings, including brothers, James, Charles, Len and Bob, and sisters, Anna Lee, Betty Jo and Peggy; granddaughter, Lara Griffin; and infant grandson, David Irvin. Lu Ellen graduated from Fairmont High School in Fairmont, West Virginia, in 1945 and then attended West Virginia University, where she graduated in 1949 with a B.S. Degree in Medical Technology. Lu Ellen was an excellent bridge player and loved puzzles and games.

Dec 19, 2020 SILVER CREEK Thomas Martin Pollock Jr., 85, of Silver Creek, formerly of Downingtown, Pa., died Tuesday, Dec. 15, 2020, at Brooks Memorial Hospital, Dunkirk, following a brief illness. He is now home with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He was born in West Chester, Pa., on Oct. 2, 1935, the son of the late Thomas Martin Pollock Sr. and Lois (Henry) Pollock Dickson. He enjoyed an illustrious academic and athletic career at Downingtown High School in Downingtown, Pa., and Albright College in Reading, Pa. Tom began his lifelong occupation of educational ministry following marriage to his high school sweetheart, Betty Jo Hammons on July 13, 1957. He taught history and coached football at his alma mater, Downingtown Jr/Sr High School, before taking the role of senior pastor of Goodwill Methodist Church.

Mercy promotes chief nursing officer to senior vice president

Betty Jo Rocchio, Mercy’s chief nursing officer, has been promoted to senior vice president while keeping her current role overseeing nursing. Understanding the critical role nurses play in the overall health outcomes for patients, as part of her enhanced responsibilities, she will also join Mercy’s senior leadership team. In her expanded role, Rocchio will continue to lead more than 15,000 nurses across Mercy’s four states of Missouri, Arkansas, Oklahoma and Kansas. She will also work with other clinical leaders and teams to identify and standardize optimal care paths for patients, using data gleaned from Mercy’s robust electronic health record.
