I just finished
“American Nations: A History of the Eleven Rival Regional Cultures of North America” by Colin Woodard. It’s a 400-year look at the nations and cultures that shaped our continent, the migration of those cultural groups, and the resulting political and social outlooks that continue to affect our lives. For one thing, it reinforces the axiom that the personal is political. Well worth reading for anyone who aspires to run for office or help make decisions in our shared national life.

I was given
“Wilding: The Return of Nature to a British Farm” by Isabella Tree, and finished the book in eight days. Intensive farming of its 3,500 acres was driving the family bankrupt, so in 2000 the land was handed back to nature. She explains how it was done – with the challenges as well as the successes – until there were nightingales and turtledoves nesting there. I found it fascinating.

As a child growing up and even now, there are sights and smells that remind me of the holidays, including Christmas Eve dinner.
My roots are in the Southern Tier of New York state, mainly the greater Binghamton area, where my lone surviving aunt and other family members still reside.
It is in that house, on Dimmock Hill Road in Binghamton, where MaryAnn Samsonik creates one of the most memorable meals of the year.
The night which included my parents and my cousins, followed by their future spouses at “the kids table” through the years featured a feast of Russian, Polish and Slovak items.

MONTANDON â Chris Pinchak is happy to be a volunteer for The Salvation Army because he believes in the organizationâs mission.
âTheir core beliefs and their values go along with what I believe and value â taking care of each other, family, and Christian-centered faith, the 32-year-old volunteer said.
Pinchak said he first got involved two years ago, after becoming friends with Joel Harris, whoâs the Salvation Armyâs Community Coordinator for both the Sunbury and Milton citadels.
Pinchak said he tries to do what he can during the year, but the holiday season is his busiest time, especially this year.
