The Valley Humane Society has received a $1,500 grant from Petco Love, a nonprofit foundation founded by the Petco national chain of pet stores.
âMuch of our work centers on keeping dogs and cats out of the shelter in the first place,â said Melanie Sadek, executive director of the Valley Humane Society. âThis generous grant from Petco Love will help Valley Humane take a big step toward ensuring lost animals are recovered by the families who love them, instead of ending up in the system.â
The Pleasanton-based Valley Humane Society reported finding homes for 915 dogs and cats in 2020, a 29% increase over the previous year. Valley Humane said it also met a 400% increase in demand from people needing assistance feeding their pets during the COVID-19 pandemic through its AniMeals pet food pantry.

ANIMAL WATCH-At 1:00 p.m. on May 7, her last day as General Manager of Los Angeles Animal Services, Brenda Barnette issued the announcement that she launched the Safety Net Foster Program for LA City residents “facing a crisis and needing short-term housing for their pet.”
On the surface, this may sound like a humane idea, but the timing raises immediate suspicion. Why would a retiring General Manager issue a media release of a new program during the last few hours of her tenure? And, why is there no mention of agreement to this by incoming Interim General Manager Dana Brown?
In fact, where is the concurring approval of the Mayor and the City Council of a program which results in the City taking responsibility for pets still owned by the homeless, incarcerated, hospitalized and victims of domestic violence but placed in foster homes by LA Animal Services?

âWe have 18 going tonight,â to places âas far away as Rochester, New York,â she said.
In a news release announcing the grant, Ruin Creek APS founder Mary Boyd said her organization works closely with the Vance shelter to prepare cats and dogs for transportation.
