Bedford County School Board votes to allow fall, spring athletes to compete

The Bedford County School Board on Thursday night voted to allow athletes and teams to compete during the fall and spring seasons. After about two hours of discussion during a special called meeting, the board voted unanimously to support a return to play with a number of mitigation measures in place. The county will follow a return plan based on a 26-page document that includes an exhaustive list of safety measures. Virginia High School League measures, included in the document, also will be followed. As part of the vote Thursday, the board also approved three updates to the plan division staff originally had presented.

Bedford County Public Schools sees first staff COVID-19 death, Lynchburg-area school divisions report 79 cases this week

A Bedford County Public Schools staff member died this week due to complications from COVID-19. At its Thursday night meeting, the Bedford County School Board held a moment of silence for Charles Ragland who died Jan. 13 according to his obituary. Jason Johnson, who was elected as chairman of the board at Thursdayâs meeting, said Ragland suffered complications from COVID-19. This is the first COVID-19-related death reported by the division. Ryan Edwards, spokesperson for the division, said Ragland was an employee in the divisionâs transportation department. Johnson said he hoped for âpeace and comfort to the family and all who knew and loved Mr. Ragland.â
