Police nab 5 for store break-in on Charlotte Street
Friday 1 January 2021
FOUR women and a man were arrested by police in Port of Spain on Thursday after they were found hiding in a variety store during a break-in.
In a release on Friday, police said at about 3.45 am on Thursday, officers of the Inter-Agency Task Force were on mobile patrol in the Besson Street police district when they got a call of a break-in at a variety store on the corner of Queen and Charlotte Streets.
When they got to the store, they saw several items scattered at the front of the premises. The front gate of the store was partially open and voices were heard coming from inside.
A 41-year-old hairdresser is expected to be questioned today on allegations that she set afire a hair salon along Independence Square, Port of Spain.
The woman told police that at about 1.15pm she and her 54-year-old landlord were at the hairdresser’s apartment/business place having a discussion.
It was said that the night before, thieves had broken into the apartment and stole a flat iron as well as other products.
The 41-year-old blamed robbery on a lack of proper secured doors on the compound and demanded that the 54-year-old land lord replace the stolen items. However, the land lord refused.
The owner told police that he secured his building along George Street around 4pm yesterday.
When he returned this morning, he observed that the place was in a mess.
He conducted further checks and saw that one of the doors had been pried open.
He took a tally of his inventory, and observed several boxes of meat, including chicken, ox-tail, saltfish, and smoke herring, among others, were missing.
Additionally, some cutting tools also could not be accounted for.
The police were notified and officers from the Besson Street police station responded.
Meanwhile, police are investigating the robbery of a 30-year-old man on his way home.
