Using proactive safety practices can reduce recordable incidents on construction jobsites by up to 85%, according to the findings of the 2021 Safety Performance Report, published by the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) to coincide with Construction Safety Week, May 3-7. According to the ABC, the report is an annual assessment designed to further the construction industry’s understanding of how to achieve world-class safety by deploying its STEP Safety Management System.
The annual report details the impact of using the proactive safety practices outlined in the STEP system, citing the ability to reduce recordable incidents by up to 85%. This means the best-performing companies utilizing STEP are more than six times safer than the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics industry average.

Costs for engineering and construction materials rose for the sixth consecutive month in April, pushing the headline IHS Markit PEG Engineering and Construction Cost Index (ECCI) downward to 72.4, a 7.0-point decline from the March figure.
Produced by IHS Markit and the Procurement Executives Group (PEG), the ECCI is based upon data independently obtained and compiled by IHS Markit from procurement executives representing leading engineering, procurement and construction firms. It tracks industry-specific trends and variations, identifying market turning points for key projects, and is intended to act as a leading indicator for wage and material inflation specific to this construction and engineering industry.

Organizers of the 2022 edition of bauma – the world’s leading trade show for construction machinery, building material machines, mining machines, construction vehicles and construction equipment – have announced the event has been postponed to October 24 to 30, 2022. The global event was originally scheduled to be held from April 4 to 10. However, ongoing uncertainties related to the pandemic led show organizer Messe München to delay the event.
A strong recovery in the second half of 2020, driven by increased activity in both infrastructure and construction, has propelled demand for equipment, according to Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE). Low dealer inventory levels and the need to restock also contributed to an increase in order intake. Deliveries across all global regions increased, led by demand for large and medium-sized machines. The result was a 23% increase in Q1 2021 net sales for the company, and a significant 73% increase in order intake for the quarter.
During the first three months of 2021, Volvo CE saw net sales grow to SEK 24,742 M compared to SEK 20,148 M in Q1 2020, and slightly higher than the same period in 2019. Operating income rose to SEK 3,822 M, up from SEK 2,678 M in the same period of 2020.
