There were no roll calls in the Senate last week. Climate change (S 9) The House, 144 to 14, and the Senate on a voice vote without a roll call, approved and sent to Gov. Charlie Baker a 57-page climate change bill. A key section makes the state’s greenhouse gas emissions reduction goal net zero by 2050. The bill is sponsored by Sen. Mike Barrett, D-Cambridge, and Rep. Thomas Golden, D-Lowell, who led the successful charge for legislative approval of the legislation for several months in 2020. An identical measure had passed in the House by 145 to 9 and in the Senate by 38 to 2 in 2020 margins that were large enough for the Legislature to easily override any gubernatorial veto. Instead, Beacon Hill Roll Call reports on the percentage of times local representatives voted with their party’s leadership in the 2020 legislative session. Beacon Hill Roll Call uses 259 votes from the 2020 House session as the basis for this report. This includes all roll calls that were not on local issues. The votes of the 125 Democrats were compared to former House Speaker Bob DeLeo until he resigned in December. After that, they were compared to current Speaker Ron Mariano. The votes of the 30 Republicans were compared with House Minority Leader Rep. Brad Jones, R-North Reading.

Charlie Baker a 57-page climate change bill. A key section makes the state’s greenhouse gas emissions reduction goal net zero by 2050. “This bill steps up the pace of our collective drive to contain climate change,” said Sen. Mike Barrett, D-Lexington, Senate Chair of the Committee on Telecommunications, Utilities and Energy. “It’s the strongest effort of its kind in the country. With the tools the Legislature assembles here, we’re constructing the response we need and providing a blueprint to other states.”
